Taira Gusuku (Taira-jo Site)
Taira Gusuku is a castle built on a hilltop 109 meters above sea level, the highest point in Tomigusuku City, located behind the Taira community.
The Gusuku is surrounded by a steep cliff to the west, but the slope is more moderate on the east and south sides where castle walls and stone paved roads can be seen inside the wooded areas. The Gusuku grounds contain a sacred site worshipped by the people of the Taira community. The Noro priestess and religious leaders of the community, as well as families come to offer prayers for the Hatsuogami (New Year’s Day prayers) and Gogatsu Umachii (May Festival).
The castle wall is located along the 100-meter elevation contour line, with stone walls stacked between existing large rocks on the eastern and southern sides of the castle to make optimum use of the terrain. The castle wall consists mostly of stacked natural stones, but a portion of the eastern wall is built of cut stones, indicating a transition in castle-building techniques.
Soil layers containing buried cultural assets from the Gusuku period have been confirmed under the cliff and in the flat area at the top of the Gusuku. Test-pit surveys conducted to date have uncovered precious artifacts such as earthenware, Chinese ceramics, items made of animal bones, fish hooks, and steel arrowheads, as well as carbonized rice, wheat, and millets.
Based on these survey findings, Taira Gusuku is estimated to have been built around the 14th to the 15th centuries, with innovative features characteristic of the Nanzan Kingdom during the Sanzan period. Taira Gusuku is the only site in Tomigusuku City where remains of castle masonry can be observed.
Taira Gusuku is also the setting for kumiodori (Ryukyuan opera) “Misho-no-en”, which was performed at Shurijo Castle to entertain the investiture envoys from China during the era of the Kingdom of the Ryukyus. A monument on this kumiodori was erected in 2003.
