Tuduruchi-ga spring is documented in the Ryukyu-koku Kyuki (Old Records of the Ryukyuan State) which was compiled in 1731 by the Royal Government of the Kingdom of the Ryukyus. It has been treasured as a precious water source since some 300 years ago. Located on the main thoroughfare connecting Shimajiri and Naha, the spring was commonly used by people travelling on the road.
Since olden times, the spring water was used for washing, bathing and other household purposes. The spring never dried up even during droughts and always offered such abundant flow that people from neighboring villages came for water at times of shortage. The spring not only benefitted the neighboring communities but also provided water to rice paddies in a broader area via irrigation channels extending from Tuduruchi-ga spring to the Shimoda Plain.
In the postwar era, Tuduruchi-ga continued to be used as a water source for local, small-scale water supply system. At one point, the spring water was fed all the way to the Ueda community. Today, the water volume of Tuduruchi-ga has decreased significantly due to development in the surrounding areas. Residents of the Taira and Takamine communities offer prayers at the spring at times of Hatsuogami (New Year’s Day prayers) and Gogatsu Umachii (May Festival).
In 1995, Tuduruchi-ga spring and its catchment basin were improved as Seseragi Park, taking advantage of the water source. The spring continues to be treasured by the local residents as an object of worship as well as a place for relaxation and refreshment.
