Nagamine Gusuku (Nagamine-jo Site)
Nagamine Gusuku is located atop a hill 98 meters above sea level, on the boundaries of the Kakazu and Nagado hamlets.
It is said that the Gusuku was prepared as the forefront for the Nanzan (southern kingdom) during the Sanzan (three kingdoms) period, and was the residence for Nagamine Aji. The stone walls of the Gusuku have not yet been confirmed, but according to oral tradition, it is said that the stones of the Gusuku were used for the construction of the stone bridge at Madanbashi.
Unearthed from the Gusuku property are Gusuku-related earthenware, iron arrowheads, Chinese celadon and white porcelains. Looking at the artifacts that contain mixtures of talc which are not produced in Okinawa, it shows the possibilities of direct or indirect exchange between the Ryukyu Kingdom and the Kyushu area.
According to legend, in the conflict with Nakama Aji, a neighboring chieftain, Nagamine Aji was defeated in the castle town of Nagamine Gusuku and as he took flight, he made it appear as though he committed suicide by throwing himself and the horse that he rode into a well located within the castle grounds, meanwhile making a successful escape.
It is speculated that the establishment and active period of the Nagamine Gusuku was between the 14th to the 15th centuries.
