Moving Forward As One with the City of Christchurch
The City of Christchurch, New Zealand experienced a largescale earthquake on February 22nd, 2011, 17 days before the Great East Japan Earthquake. As a city that is progressing toward recovery alongside Christchurch, Sendai City responded to a call to participate in Christchurch's city centre recovery project. In November 2014, a streetlanp identical to the gas lamps in front of Sendai Station was erected in Christchurch's city centre. Its crownpiece is a statuette of Date Masamune on his horse taken from a gas lamp that withstood the earthquake in Sendai. We sincerely hope that the light of Sendai illuminating Christchurch will be passed down to future generations as a symbol of the bond between our cities that are progressing toward recovery together.
