Higashi Koyasan Okunoin
Chomeiji Temple has its origin, according to the origin and history of the temple, in an establishment of a building
in Yahara by Shigeaki Masujima, a former vassal of the Hojo clan of Odawara, who climbed Koyasan under a
Buddhist name of Keisan and there obtained a wooden statue of Kobo Daishi by perception. Masujima Shigetoshi, a
heir of Shigeaki, followed the spirit of Keisan acharya (person renowned for achievements as a Buddhist) and built a
building with a Buddhist statue according to the style of Koyasan in Kishu (today in Wakayama Prefecture); the
temple was then named Chomeiji by Shuzan, priest of highest rank of Koike residence of Hasedera temple.
The back building was constructed by Shigetoshi who followed the spirit of Keisan and imitated the background to
scenery of an ultimate ascetic practice of Kobo Daishi in Koyasan in Kishu. A plenty of consolation towers, stone
lanterns, Roku Jizo-son (representation of salvation by six Buddhist deities to six Buddhist worlds), towers for
consolation and funeral purposes, Gohyaku Rakan (five hundred warlike deities serving as guardians of Buddhism)
basins and a water well used as a mirror for checking own health condition are arranged on the both sides along the
road going from a bridge to the mausoleum to the back building (mausoleum of Kobo Daishi), and the like. Thus
constructed by imitating Koyasan in Kishu, the temple is called Higashi Koyasan. back building as above described
was built by compacting that of Koyasan in Kishu, while the building still creates an atmosphere suitable for sacred
site。
The Chomeiji temple was damaged by fire several times and many buildings inside were rebuilt since the Meiji
Restoration, however cultural properties including the oldest temple bell in Tokyo (with an inscription of the years
1650), wooden plaques representing sceneries of theatrical works and stone figures are preserved.
