Large Wisteria Tree
Designated a natural monument by Fukuoka prefecture
Location: Kumano Shrine, Nakayama
The origin of this Japanese wisteria tree is as follows: When Man san, a sake maker,
in Nakayama visited Osaka in the Kyoho era (1716 - 1735) he brought back seeds the
famous Japanese wisteria in Kawachi Noda. The blossoms of the wisteria in Noda were
renowned for their beauty and were compared with the famous cherry blossoms of Yoshino
in Kyoto. Man san planted the seeds in his garden and in time a beautiful wisteria
grew with long branches which were covered in blossoms every spring. These beautiful
blossoms attracted crowds of people. However, on one occasion a drunken samurai drew
his sword and caused a serious disturbance. After the incident it was decided that the
wisteria tree be moved to a more sedate location in the grounds of Kumano shrine.
These days, a local preservation group takes care of the tree and every year many
people come to view the wisteria blossoms in mid to late April.
