Roukokumon
Okinawa Commemorative National Govemment Park
'Roukoku' means "water clock". A water tank was positioned in the turret atop the gate, and the volume of dripping water was used to measure time. Together with the sun-dial located in the square just past the gate, the water was used to tell the time. which was announced by striking a drum.
The gate was also called 'Kagoise-ujo,' or palanquin-boarding gate, because seniorcourt offcials arriving at Shurijo Castle would alight from their palanquins here out of re-spect for the King.
Roukokumon was first built around the 15th Century, and removed in the early Showa period when it became too old for use. It was restored in 1992.
